LANDSCAPES

Landscapes have always been a driving force in my life. From the first time, I had a 35mm camera in my hand back in high school through advanced photography in college – shooting 3×5 and later onto digital, I have always looked for serenity in the naturally unobstructed views of nature, cityscapes, and the ocean. Travel is a big part of who I am and trying to capture a fraction of what is seen has always been a priority. Anyone who has ever road tripped with a photographer knows the trials and tribulations I put my wife through.

There are few things in life that I am patient enough to wait for, however, getting the ‘perfect’ shot is definitely one of them. There are many factors that construct a great photo, having the patients to allow them together is worth the wait.

LIFESTYLE

If you re-read that definition, the goal of a lifestyle shoot is to document real-life events in an artistic manner. The goal is not to recreate life events or stage lifestyle images but to document life as it happens. Yes, there is often a loose script or objectives that are looking to be met but they are not overly staged or contrived.

Over the years I have photographed many events; everything from the ESPN X-games, partnership activations, triathlons, mud runs, zombies, beer festivals to weddings. Environmental factors, being technically proficient, and making people feel comfortable are three powerhouse elements that make for exceptional lifestyle shots. Something I strive for in every composition.

The best camera you have is the one that is always with you. The technology in cellphones continues to get better each and every day. But let’s face it their capabilities are sometimes synthetic. Most people nowadays have one and it creates a pretty equal playing field. There aren’t RAW images to manipulate and the lens/lenses are very limiting in both direct sun and low light.

I find myself taking more pictures with my cellphone after having kids than I have in my entire life. It’s always on my person and can be deployed in a matter of seconds. The images are not phenomenal, I seldomly use filers [aside from black and white] and it will give you an idea of what I like as far as a composition with minimal tricks and gadgets.

My equipment list has been a parabola, when I was shooting heavily in commercial photography the amount of gear I packed for shoots was literally a pick-up truckload. Nowadays I try to challenge myself to do more with less. My phone is slowly working its way into my kit, the simplicity of it is what makes it so appealing.
